If you're looking at this starter set, you're probably in a similar position as I was. And you're looking to start playing bass guitar, but aren't so self-assured or financially inclined that you're looking to spend a lot of money on a beginning instrument. Which brings you to starter sets in the first place. You want everything you need at a good price while not sacrificing playability. And to me: that's exactly what this set is.

The bass itself is quite nice, exceeding my expectations. Any pictures you find online usually wash out the shine and make the color look flat and boring. But it's a pretty striking, deep, shiny black. It's not a $1000 bass, but it looks way nicer than the price would make you think it does. As for sound, I've never played a bass before, so I have nothing to compare it to. However, the amp brings the sound through pretty cleanly and warmly. And I really have no complaints.

The thumb rest on the bass just seemed to detract from the aesthetic appeal, and got in my way when moving down a string. I find it's just as easy to rest your thumb on the pickup when playing the E string. Although it can be removed easily and in short order with an average-sized Phillips screwdriver, it leaves kind of unsightly screw holes behind, that had low-laying, somewhat jagged edges. I filed that down carefully with some sandpaper, and it's now fine. If there's anything I have against the bass, it's the thumb rest. Since it's removable, it's really no big deal. Just making note of it.

Regarding accessories:
The case is, as others have said, not capable of protecting against anything except scratches or dust. It's better than nothing, but the bottom-mounted zipper makes casing and uncasing awkward and slow, and I always worry about the fabric pulling on one of the tuning keys and untuning it.

The picks are picks. Rounded, triangular pieces of plastic. I haven't used them, because I've preferred finger-plucking so far. Feels way more assured and direct, plus I find it easier to mute strings with the pick not in the way. But they're a nice addition, for those that want them.

The strap is extremely simple. It feels somewhat cheaply made and thin, but it will suffice, temporarily. Just like the case, eventually you'll probably want another, better one.

The tuner feels kind of lightweight and flimsy, but it seems to work okay. I have no thoughts that it will break soon unless I'm rough with it.

The DVD was a nice addition, and did teach me a little. But most of the material can be absorbed in a single viewing, and probably figured out completely in three or four. It's also quite short. Also a nice addition (and includes electric and acoustic guitar sections) but you will want more books, DVDs, a teacher, or all of the above to really get onto learning the bass.


The bass guitar had been on my sizable list of "Instruments to try out, eventually..." for some time, but upon starting the anime series Beck (which any rock fan would love, regardless of age or thoughts toward Japanese animation) I realized it was simply time to start. And I don't think I could have picked a better starter set for the price. I've only had this thing for a day, but currently I'm 100% satisfied. Shipping was super-quick, too. I'll add to this review if anything breaks.

The photos on this page does not do the product justice... after I got it I was like WOW! this thing looks cool! It is in perfect working condition and everything is as expected. The gig bag sucks though. There is zero protection or whatsoever provided... but the strap ain't too bad. The connecting portion could be made of better material... but it will last a few years from my guesstimate. The amp, like they said, ain't got much kick... but when they specified it to be a practice amp, why would you want more? If you are in your room or practicing with your buddies, why do you need to have the whole neighborhood listen in? Over all, it's a great deal for a nice product... and that fuzz people talk about on the fret? That's called n00bness... it's a beginner's common mistake, something you stop doing after some practice.

After reading many reviews on other websites, I got very nervous about the quality of the product. After it arrived I could not have been more suprised. It is better than I could have imagined. The amp works fine, the tuner is great, the bag is fine, the strap is strong, everything that I doubted would be any good, turned out to be great. The picture of the guitar does not do it justice. It is a very nice looking guitar, and it is by no means cheap. Many say you use your fingers, not picks to play the bass, but for many songs, picks are ideal. The 5 picks included in this package are not to thin they work fine. The only complaint I have is the DVD. Its says it includes over 2 hours of footage, (which it does) but only a third of that footage is for a bass guitar. It is a great product and I would recomend it to anyone!

This is a very nice combo at a cheap price, especially for beginners. The extremely fast shipping took exactly two days, so that was nice. After a few months, I've had some problems though.

When I first got it, the amp was dead. Didn't work at all until I opened it up and saw that a soldered cord had mysteriously snapped off a contact, possibly during some bumpy shipping. I simply fixed it by removing some the cord's plastic and wiring it onto the port. From then on the amp worked, but because of it's size you should just use it for practicing, but look into buying a bigger amp if you want to perform with it.

My strap broke after a while since it is kinda cheapish and low-quality so I got a better one. Same with the cord - it snapped when I tripped over it, and it's short anyway so I got a longer, better one.

I've had trouble with the bass making weird buzzing noises at certain frets, so that's a bit annoying.

The instructional dvd wasn't all too good... I bought an Idiot's instructional book that turned out better, so get a book as well.

Other than all that, it's a good deal for a beginner, with a nice sound and everything. After a while, it's ideal to get a new bass.

Three words: This Bass Rocks! As a fairly new bass guitarist, I was looking for a bass guitar that has good sound quality, little fret buzzing and more good Pros. This bass guitar has few if little cons. In fact, I can't really think of anything that is bad about the bass its self.

The Amp. The amp its self is a pretty good practice amp. Hence the name, it is for practicing so you would not find too much loudness or a lot of settings on it. Its a pretty fine bass amp! :D.

The gig bag. As for the gig bag.. it literally has no padding or protection for the bass its self. Also, the strap for the bass is a pretty good one. Although in my opinion I would use a Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar strap, just because I like those better :P

The DVD is also very helpful if you are a true beginner to the bass guitar. It introduces to you the "need to knows" about the bass guitar and a few scales and such that would make you feel as a pretty good bassist.

All in all, this is a pretty good bass guitar package! :D

My eleven-year-old son saved up his money to buy this guitar. From the images it looks black (which is what he wanted), but it is actually purplish-blue - he still loves it. The downside is that the strap that came with it broke in a matter of days - the plastic piece broke. Not a big deal since his electric guitar strap that came with that guitar broke as well so we were kind of expecting that with a starter strap. I ended up buying him a designer strap with metal pieces. The amp that came with it sounds great and the cord is sufficiently long enough. Another thing that I would be prepared for is that the case that comes with this guitar is somewhat thin. If you want to protect the guitar then perhaps buy a hard case or padded case. Overall the sound of the guitar is great, it is very sturdy, and the amp is high quality.

He has been playing this guitar non-stop and teaching himself over the Internet. This summer when things slow down we'll get him some lessons. He already is bringing his guitar to school to play in a school play. This being his first major purchase on his own, he is very happy with it.

I sent my son out to pick up another base and he brought this back. It's nice and all but I asked for a base. I coach little league and some dog's run off with second base for the third time this month. The boy's just mixed up. i'm so supprised!! i thought it'd be a horrible pack but it is accually a great pack for beginers!The amp isnt that bad if your a beginer (i mean you dont know what its supposed to sound like) the dvd...meh.... its ok.. the strap isnt like beutiful or anything just like guitar hero ones lol. I recieved this for Christmas to try and learn how to play the bass. I have been practicing with this bass around a hour to an hour and a half a every day with no problems. The instruction dvd was worth watching once and thats about it. The tuner works but you need to know that each string has a light then you tune it between the flat and sharp scale, which never playing before i didn't understand at first. Also the picks are useless most base players play with their fingers and this is even the way they show you in there dvd. Overal Its perfect for someone like me that wants to try and learn an instrument without paying 300-700 just for a good bass guitar.

I got this Bass for my ten year old son. We got it very fast and in good condition. I had to do a lot of adjustment with no directions. After an hour of messing around with the bridge I found the neck adjustment, then it went much better. I have a couple of six string guitars and I've never had a guitar with a neck adjustment, so it's a case of not knowing how to adjust the neck without directions. For as cheap as the price is this is a good guitar for a starter. If I had one gripe it would be to include instructions on how to adjust it in detail. Rock on.

I bought this from Amazon because the price could not be beat anywhere else. It was shipped very fast and the package was intact.

However, two things were wrong with the guitar:
1. The tuner for the high G string was stripped inside. The string could not be tuned. I had to replace this myself. Easy fix but it cost me about $20 to order a package of 4 new tuners from eBay.
2. The setup was high and the head of the intonation screw for the A string was stripped and could not be moved. It actually looked like the head was manufactured defective.

I fixed these things myself (actually, I left the intonation of the A string a little sharp because it was off by just a very very little bit).
My only recourse would have been to return the bass for a refund but I decided to keep it and do the repairs myself.
Not a realistic option for most people, I'd guess.

Other than that, the bass is very nice. I wanted a cheap bass to learn on. Silvertone quality control is just lax.
