It is often said the "beauty is skin deep," but the Dean Edge Bass is clearly and exception. While beauty was the inspiration, we put every bit of our 20-plus years of design experience into these models. We started with a body styled and contoured for comfort, and to make them lighter we used choice basswood. The maple necks were profiled to be faster and sleeker than virtually all others. We designed a "uniquely Dean" custom neck joint and heel along with our asymmetrical four-bolt pattern, creating uninterrupted access all the way up the two octave neck. ±1±: Best Buy I've been learning to play bass with this model for about a year and a half, and I enjoy it thoroughly. It's lighter than some instruments, but still has enough mass that it has a good tone. The neck is maybe not as slender as some fancier, faster basses, but it's still quite comfortable. It stays in tune well, and I've never had any troubles with the knobs or electronics.

With only a single pickup, and just knobs for volume and treble, you don't have much flexibility in sound. If you're just learning or playing for fun, this isn't much of an issue. The bass sounds great for a variety of jazz, blues and rock. One person I play with thinks the tone from this bass is nicer than one of his that cost about eight times as much.

A couple of other thoughts... You'll want to find a local guitar store to help you make adjustments periodically (and perhaps with initial setup), or learn to do it yourself. I use a Behringer practice amp, and it's partially responsible for the good tone that I seem to get. Finally, I rarely use a pick - if that's more your style, the lack of a pick guard might be an issue for you. on Sale!
