French Horns - What's the Best French Horn For You?

!: French Horns - What's the Best French Horn For You?

French horns make use of either rotary valves or pistons to change pitches and to produce higher-octave sounds. While it looks like your typical wind instrument, it is actually available in different kinds and you can play them depending on what type of music you fancy.

Pick your French horn

Among the types you can choose from include the single, Vienna, double, marching, and triple French horns. The single French horn has 3 to 4 rotary valves on its standard cone-shaped bore. You may find it difficult to play them for higher ranges but they are commonly used for orchestral performances.

If you want a French horn that produces opulent legato sounds, then play the Vienna French horn since it has an extended bell flare. It also makes use of a Pumpenvalve instead of the usual rotary valves or traditional pistons. The keys can be changed using the crook system like the Natural French horn.

If you want 2 horns in one frame, play the double French horn. It has the F and the B-flat horns with a 4th valve that is thumb-operated that allows you to change from a bright B-flat sound to the warmer F. However, if you want a French horn with additional F or E flat alto keys, then the triple is for you, or a marching French horn if you want a B flat alto pitch. The Marching French horn is also lighter so they can be played in formation marches, compared to the triple French horn that is heavier with an awkward shape.

However, whatever type of French horn you're planning to play, make sure it has a shiny lacquer finish to protect it from corrosion and rust. Aside from that, buy a thermoplastic case for extra protection.

Bass Strings Guide - What You Need To Know Before Buying Strings for Your Bass Guitar

!: Bass Strings Guide - What You Need To Know Before Buying Strings for Your Bass Guitar

There will come a time when you will need to change the strings of your bass guitar. For that reason, here is a bass strings guide you can refer to. To begin with, bass strings are cords that are thickly coiled so they can produce very low sounds. You can buy them usually in sets of 4 to 6 strings depending on your type of bass guitar. 4-stringed bass guitars require strings for E, A, D, and G.

Your guide to strings

A bass strings guide won't be complete without it telling you about the qualities of the strings you can buy and these are the stainless steel and the nickel-wound bass strings.

If you prefer to play bass with a rock band, then the nickel-wound strings are ideal for you because their tones are captivating and clear. These are strings that are made with steel wraps that are plated with nickel.

However, if you prefer to play your bass without the clicking sound caused by your fingers or the strings hitting the fretboard, you can opt for the stainless steel bass strings because they are smoother and restricts noise. These are also ideal if you like playing in long gigs and performing in studio sessions.

Still, make sure to check on the durability of your bass strings-you wouldn't want one to snap in the middle of your performance. It will definitely hurt.

For extra durability, make sure they have a round core to provide a more cohesive contact between the core wire and the outer wrap. Aside from that, make sure that they are treated with liquid nitrogen to ensure longevity and prevent immediate rusting or thinning due to sweaty fingers and excessive use.

The term "Riyaz" comes from India where it means the all-embracing art of practice, with all its associated ritual, discipline, teacher-mentorship and sheer hard work. There are countless stories about the superhuman dedication and energy put into Indian musicians' practice regimes in order to achieve virtuosic levels of artistry. Bass Riyaz takes a wholistic approach to the development of craft on the electric bass guitar. It is necessary and part of the course of this book to touch on the philosophical, psychological, and physical aspects necessary to master oneself and one's instrument. I hope that Bass Riyaz serves not only as a reference book kept on your bookshelf, but as a workbook that is a companion in your practice room every day.

Let's Hear 'Em Bass Guitar Chords

!: Let's Hear 'Em Bass Guitar Chords

You've heard a lot about rhythm and blues, but it's the bass that makes you want to dance. It's the thumpa-thumpa that gets your groove on, your head bobbing up and down and your feet a-tapping. Indeed, it's all about the bass - the lower notes that give guitar music the texture and body. In a band, it's the bass player that closes the gap between tempo and harmony. That's from endless years of practice perfecting the craft, which beginners can learn from bass guitar chords.

Hearing bass?

If you have heard the songs of Metallica (who hasn't?), you've definitely heard the heavy tones that prop up all throughout, giving them that distinctive sound that only Metallica can offer. Finally, bassists have entered the front door, and are no longer asked to pass through the kitchen door. Playing bass guitar chords have given bassists the tickets to the front door.

It is easy to learn to play the bass guitar, but mind you, the bass guitar is very difficult to tame. If you are dreaming to hold a bass guitar onstage, then practice playing a note at a time. You will be surprised to discover that before you can pluck a note, you will have to master some hand exercises to speed up your guitar playing.

What's the big deal about bass guitars and bass guitar chords?

A bass guitar is unlike a regular guitar. It has four strings and is an octave lower than the bass strings of a regular guitar. The bass guitar has a longer neck for longer scales. Most bass guitars have hollow bodies, and the sound that is bounced back has a different resonance and tone. The bass sound provides the low-pitched bus runs and bass-line typical in different music genres - jazz, fusion, rock, and funk. A sturdy guitar can take all the punishment, as well as give the best bass bellow.

Chords refer to the collection of tones when played together simultaneously. This can refer to any type of fretted string instrument. There is no fuss about bass guitar chords, really. They are plainly guitar chords played on the bass.

Bass guitar chords always have 12 keys. It must show the major, minor, diminished, minor 6th, and major 7th. The suspended 4th added 7th must also be learned. Bass guitar chords also have notations - names and locations of the notes on the frets and strings, as well as the enharmonic equivalents and the positions of these notes within the bass clef. As you learn the different music styles from bass guitar chords, you will soon be going into bass runs, low pitched bass lines, and soloing.

Raring to play the bass guitar?

If you think the bass guitar is yours to tame, you have to get a good instrument to practice the bass guitar chords with. Check out the different bass guitars to suit your needs. Some of the most popular ones used by professionals are the ESP B50, Squier Standard Jazz, Yamaha RBX260, Epiphone Accu Bass, and Ibanez GSR200. If you are thinking about a good investment, get a Tobias Growler 5-string electric bass guitar. This is expensive but will withstand all that picking, plucking, and slapping. If you see yourself playing the bass long term, then this is the guitar for you.

One can say that behind the great bass guitar chord playing, is also a great bass guitar, and player. The formula also calls for dedication, determination, and enthusiasm. Without these, neither great bass guitar nor bass guitar chord can be played. Get lessons, a songbook, and download bass guitar chords from several guitar sites online. Now, let's hear some bass.

Pre-Stretching New Guitar Strings

!: Pre-Stretching New Guitar Strings

If you play guitar consistently, you already know the importance of changing your strings on a regular basis.

Old guitar strings lose their tone over time, and left on long enough, will eventually break.

A guitar student playing on a daily or even casual basis should replace guitar strings at least once a month. Many gigging guitarists will put on a new set of strings before every show.

We all know the experience of putting on a fresh set of guitar strings - installing the strings, getting tuned up, then playing a song or two, only to realize the guitar is out of tune again.

Then we tune up all over, play for a while, and before you know it, the strings are out of pitch again.

The reason for this is that new guitar strings go through a "stretching" period before they finally "seat" and hold in tune.

One way to alleviate part of this anomaly is to accelerate the process a bit by "pre-stretching" the strings when you first put them on.

As you are installing each new string, gently rotate the string, pulling and pushing it in a circular motion.

This will help to get some of the stretch out of the string before you actually start playing. Perform the pre-stretch, tune the string to pitch, and repeat.

Do this several times until the string eventually remains at or close to proper pitch, then move on to the next string.

An important note is to do this "gently", and avoid yanking on the string. Too much pressure can break the string, or cause damage to the guitar nut resulting in a costly repair.

Speed up the normal stretching process of new guitar strings by taking a minute to "pre-stretch" them, and you will find that you can quickly get back to what's really important...playing guitar!

Electric Bass Guitars & Amplifiers

!: Electric Bass Guitars & Amplifiers

Electric bass guitars require external amplification in much the same way that standard electric guitars do - and for the same reasons. There are several electric bass guitars with a hollow body, similar to that found on acoustic guitars, and this helps to provide some extra tone to the voice. However, electric bass guitars still require external amplification to be heard, and to provide the voice which is required.

There are two basic types of amplifier that can be used by those who play electric bass guitar. The first of these is the combination or 'combo' amplifier, and this has the amplifier unit and the speaker built in to one unit. Typically this is a large, often black unit with a large speaker grill at the front, and the amplifier unit built in to the top layer, with the buttons, dials and switches at the front. The second kind of amplifier is one where the speakers are entirely separate, and the amplifier connects the guitar and the speakers through its own system.

For beginners and those on lower budgets the combination amplifier unit is an excellent choice, and has proven to be very popular amongst players for many years. It offers versatility with convenience, and often these units are built to be portable, with carry handles built in to the top of the box, and allows them to be carried without fear of being easily damaged. On the other hand, for the more experienced player the separate amplifier and speakers arrangement provides the choice of each - giving more versatility and greater freedom of choice when it comes to each individual piece of equipment. Some guitarists prefer certain types of amplifier, or amplifiers that provide specific features that may not be found on the more generic combination units.

When it comes to recording electric bass guitars, this is often achieved by completely by-passing the amplifier, and instead connecting the guitar directly in to the sound recording equipment, and then providing external amplification from this. By setting the guitar up in this way, a truer sound quality is produced, rather than recording acoustically a sound which has been created electronically. This is for much the same reason as electronic keyboards are recorded in the same way, as the external speakers may hinder or reduce the eventual quality. Recording the electric bass guitar by directly connecting it to the sound recording equipment also provides the artist and the studio to create and apply extra effects, possibly digitally, by directly manipulating the original electric signal. This helps to ensure that there is no degrading of the quality, as well as providing even greater flexibility.

In addition to amplifier units there are also such items as pre-amplifiers which can also be used to apply certain effects, or alter the voice of the guitar in some specific way. For example, pre-amplifiers can sometimes be used to affect the way a guitar sounds, helping to re-create the sound of a different brand of guitar, such as older models or those used within specific branches of music.

Ibanez SR400 Bass Guitar

The Ibanez SR400 bass guitar is very comfortable to play. The neck is thin up at the headstock, you can move your hand along it well because of the necks finish. The SR400's neck at the back has a matte finish making it very easy to slide your hands up and down the neck. Its easier to play the higher frets because the neck is a bolt-on with a curve where the neck bolts.

The body of the Ibanez SR400 is contoured very well. There are no sharp edges anywhere. You can play the SR400 standing up or sitting comfortably. If you are sitting down and put the bass on your right thigh, it will stay balanced and not lean one way or another.

Electric Bass Guitar

The SR400 bass guitar is very playable because the strings are loose. You won't have to play with much force to get a sound, and it won't wear your fingers out so much.

Ibanez SR400 Bass Guitar

The pickups of the SR400 Ibanez are in "P/J" configuration. There is a split "P" pickup at the neck position and a single humbrucker at the bridge. For each pickups volumn there are three knobs and one for tone.

The Ibanez SR400 bass guitar stays in tune very well. The tuners at the head are 2 on each side, and they are Gotoh tuners. The tuners are not to tight or loose, but they are light enough to keep the strings in tune.

The SR400 bass is good for an intermediate guitarist, and the best thing about it is its neck is so smooth, playable, and thin.

How to Learn Bass Guitar the Easy Way

Bass guitar is absolutely one of the favourite instruments to learn. This may be because the bass guitar helps lay down the beat, in much the same ways as drums but more melodically. It looks just like an electric guitar but the main differences are that it has a longer neck and only 4 strings. The strings are tuned to notes G, D, A and E. It has a solid body and frets in the same way as a six stringed guitar.

A bass guitar greatly enhances the beat of a song and the harmony. Most bassists will pick their baseline according to their style. The harmony of the bass will increase and enhance the progression of chords. Harmony greatly enhances a song and indeed defines a songs emotions. From the beat perspective, a bass' beat gives a song or tune this basic element too. Again, it underlies the basic nature of the song being played and forms a fundamental role in the definition of the song, giving it heart and tempo.

Electric Bass Guitar

In pop music a bass guitar can be seem as a very simple part of band, unless the bassist has other ideas. Just watch Mark King from Level 42. He helped make the bass guitar one of the coolest instruments to play in a group and if you have the will and the intensity a bass can be so much more. However, in reggae, hip hop and funk the bass plays a much more prominent role. Once you learn guitar bass basics you will be able to copy your heroes style and add your own traits and skills.

How to Learn Bass Guitar the Easy Way

There are quite a few styles that you can learn when playing bass. A bass solo can sometimes overpower other melodies. In heavy metal a bassist will usually tap the strings, but in rock a solo will be performed during a break in the song. In pop and funk solos would typically be performed by slapping the strings rather than tapping. In metal and rock also the bass guitarist usually plays along with the lead guitar and vocalist giving a fuller, richer sound.

In many ways the bass is an easier instrument to learn and play than the six stringed guitar, but this instrument still needs dedication and practice. So if you want to be the next Mark King or Phil Lynott get cracking!! Remember practice, determination, fun is the key to learning bass guitar so start today, there's no time to lose.
